Bon Air cosmetic smile makeover

When a cosmetic dentistry procedure becomes popular in the Midlothian and Richmond areas, it’s natural to want to experience the dramatic results for yourself. However, responsible dental patients should know what the American Dental Association has to say regarding common cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening.

The ADA advises patients to meet with with their Midlothian area dentist before starting any bleaching regimen. An oral examination that is in-depth will help your dentist to know if tooth whitening is for you. This is especially critical when you have dark stains on your teeth or multiple crowns and/or fillings.

Once you have agreed on a tooth whitening program, your dentist can supervise your use of whichever bleaching agent you have chosen. This will help you to be sure that the frequency of use of your teeth whitener is never too high.

Or, you and your dentist may choose to have your teeth whitened in their Richmond area office. In-office teeth whitening procedures take much less time than at-home whitening, but it’s essential to find out which procedure is right for you.

Also, if you are shopping for whitening tooth products at your favorite Bon Air, Midlothian, or Bon Air drugstore, be sure to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

Along with tooth whitening, there are many other state-of-the art cosmetic dentistry procedures your dentist can recommend, which will help you achieve the beautiful smile you want. These include dental implants, gum contouring, veneers, and more!

Do Whitestrips Work in Midlothian? If you have visited the toothpaste aisle at your Midlothian grocery store, you have probably noticed dozens of products that claim to whiten your teeth. A few years ago, the only over-the-counter tooth whitening options in Richmond were whitening toothpastes and Crest Whitestrips. Now there is a wide variety of products at every drugstore counter in the area.

Whitening Rinses
Whitening rinses are similar to mouthwashes. They kill bacteria, freshen breath and may help remove plaque. Whitening rinses, however, contain tooth-whitening ingredients not found in mouthwashes. Manufacturers advise taking a mouthful of the rinse and letting it slosh around on your teeth for one minute twice a day. Though this method is simple, many users never notice a lightening of their teeth. This is probably because the rinse does not touch your teeth long enough to truly whiten them.

Whitening Strips
The whitening strips you can buy in Richmond grocery stores have a couple of drawbacks. Though they contain a bleaching agent, it is much less potent than those used in dental offices. Another issue is that they do not whiten between teeth because the strips only touch the front surface. Though it is possible to remove stains, it can take months to see any whitening. By that point, you have probably spent more money than you would have if you’d have chosen the professional system at your Midlothian dental practice.

Teeth Whitening Gels
Whitening gels are painted onto teeth with a small brush. One problem with whitening gels is that they only stick to dry teeth. If any saliva gets on the teeth during treatment, the gel is more likely to slide off.

If you are serious about dramatically whitening your teeth, the safest, quickest, and most economical system is at your Midlothian dental office.

Common Myths about Midlothian Family Cosmetic Dentistry Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry is Never Necessary for a Healthy Smile

Many so-called Richmond cosmetic dental procedures are not solely cosmetic. Bon Air dental procedures such as tooth replacement are smile-enhancing and, more importantly, prevent many potential problems such as tooth movement, bone loss and difficulty chewing and speaking.

Myth #2: A Powhatan Dental Bridge is the Only Way to Replace a Missing Tooth

Dental bridges are an Midlothian dental cosmetic procedure that have been used for many years with success. However, dental implants are often a better choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants have many advantages for Wyndham dental patients. They feel like natural teeth, they are stronger, and they are easier to clean than dental bridges. Virginia tooth implants can also be used to anchor dentures or partial dentures.

Myth #3: At-Home Kits are as Effective for Powhatan Tooth Whitening Than a Professional Dental Solution

At White & White, we offer our Richmond dental patients teeth whitening treatments that provide a much greater level of whiteness than at-home kits. At-home kits may remove surface stains, but they do not provide optimum results and can often lead to uneven coloring.

Myth #4: Dental Bonding is the Best Way to Fix a Chipped Tooth.

Dental bonding can restore the shape of a tooth, but may not be the best long-term solution. If you have a damaged tooth, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers. Call us at 804-302-5592 to set up an appointment so we can determine the best solution for you.

Myth #5: Bon Air Braces are the Only Way to Straighten Teeth

Braces are often part of a transforming dental makeover for our Richmond teens and adults alike. However, if your teeth are only slightly crooked, lumineers can reshape your teeth and dramatically improve your smile. And the best thing about veneers? They offer instant results!

White & White Can Make Your Whites Whiter

Hi, I’m Drs. J. Scott White, Pranee White, and Darrell Guttery, an experienced Midlothian general dentist serving the greater Richmond area. One of the most common requests I get from my dental patients is whiter teeth.

I am happy to say that Midlothian dental patients are in luck when it comes to teeth whitening in Virginia, because cosmetic dentistry procedures like teeth whitening and veneers are safe, effective, and affordable.

Some Midlothian patients might be interested in bleaching their teeth at home. There are many affordable teeth whitening products available at Bon Air, Midlothian, and Bon Air drugstores. Remember that even though you are doing this procedure at home, you should discuss it with your Midlothian dentist and report any sensitivity that may occur.

There are many dentists in the Richmond area that offer in-office teeth bleaching which can often be done in one visit. Richmond residents who do in-office bleaching usually appreciate the care that is given to protect the soft tissues of the mouth from the bleaching agent.

Any toothpaste that has an added polishing agent is considered a whitening toothpaste. For my patients, I always tell them to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance when purchasing these.

As you can see, there are a lot of great ways to keep your teeth nice and white here in Richmond.

If you’re interested in any of these whitening methods or a complete smile makeover, call White & White at 804-302-5592. Our relaxing staff will schedule a cosmetic dental consultation at your convenience.

We hope to hear from you soon!

6 Easy Ways To Eat Like A Dentist In Midlothian

There is nothing that influences your smile as much as your eating habits in Midlothian, Virginia. Develop good eating habits and your dentist will smile down on you too. Patients in Wyndham, Bon Air, and Powhatan would do well to follow the example of a dentist in what and how they eat.

1. Rinse after eating
Rinse your mouth with a drink of water or brush your teeth after a meal. Midlothian folks who snack all day long prolong tooth exposure to sugars and food debris. Planned meals with brushing in between keeps your oral health on top.

2. Avoid sugary gum

Sugar free gum doesn’t leave sugar to break down on your teeth and spoil your hard earned healthy gums. If you are one of the many Richmond gum chewers, do your teeth a favor and go sugarless.

3. Avoid sticky foods
Sticky foods have a habit of clinging to your teeth with stronger chances for decay. Toffee, gummy candy, fruit snacks, even dried fruit can be problematic for Midlothian smiles. Brushing doesn’t always remove the obstinate particles.

4. Consume nutritious foods
A balanced diet with a variety of vitamins and minerals can keep the immune system and able to fight infection.

5. Consume cheese
Cheese contains calcium and protects from acid that breaks down tooth enamel. (It’s essential not to go overboard as cheese is high in fat.)

6. Avoid acidic foods
Acid will eat away enamel over time: lemons, red wine, soda pop. Minimize direct, constant, consistent exposure. All things in moderation.

If you have concerns about enamel damage that’s already taken place on your teeth, need help with crooked, chipped or missing teeth, or just need to get in for a check up, call White & White in Midlothian today.
