Some of our patients at White & White in Midlothian VA experience severe anxiety when undergoing dental treatment. They aren’t alone: far from it. As many as one of every four adult Americans cope with dental anxiety, to one degree or another.
It’s a serious matter, because it might keep you from seeing us every six months for a cleaning and checkup. We encourage brushing and flossing at home, but that alone isn’t enough.
The causes of dental anxiety are diverse: the fear of pain, a fear of injections, and the sense of loss of control are some of the more common. Whatever might be causing, though, we have several types of sedation dentistry that can get most dental anxiety patients through their appointment.
- Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) has been used in dentistry for more than one hundred years. It may or may not make you laugh, but it will put you in a state of relaxation. Most many patients, it’s enough to overcome their anxiety.
- Oral Conscious Sedation involves taking a sedative about an hour before the scheduled procedure. It acts quickly, is very effective, and has virtually no side effects. You won’t be asleep, but you won’t be aware of most of what’s going on. You’ll need a ride home when it’s over.
- IV Sedation is administered intravenously. It won’t put you to sleep, either, but will make you very drowsy. As with oral conscious sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you home.
If you have avoided the dentist due to dental anxiety, sedation dentistry may be the answer you’ve been looking for. White & White, in Midlothian VA, also provides general and family dentistry, and is a mercury free practice.
